Radcliffe-on-Trent Parish Council
--Taking Radcliffe forward--
Welcome
to
Radcliffe-on-Trent
2012
The Olympic
Torch is coming to Radcliffe
- June 28,
2012 -
BE THERE!!
A brief
history of Radcliffe-on-Trent
Early history - The red cliffs along the river gave
Radcliffe-on-Trent its name. The first specific information
about the village comes from the Domesday Book of 1086, some
twenty years after the Norman Conquest. This records two
manors and fisheries, but there is no mention of a church or
mills. Lamcote, Radcliffe’s neighbouring hamlet, had three
manors. Eventually it would be absorbed and administered by
Radcliffe, despite being in the ecclesiastical parish of
Holme Pierrepont. In medieval times the main landowners were
the Deyncourt, Basily, Grey and Strelly families.

The
parish council has a number of plans to help the village
celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee early in June and in fact the
events being organised start in May when the council will be staging
a Tea Party and Concert and a "Radcliffe's got history" in Grange
Hall.
Those two
events will be taking place on Thursday May 31 with the concert
starting at 2.30pm and the evening event at 7.30pm.
Tickets
for both events will be available from the parish council office and
National Dry Cleaners in the village.
The title
for the concert, which is being organised by Roy Taylor (Vince
Eager) and Bob Flower, is to be "20th Century Review" and it is
planned there will be five acts in the event.
Tickets
will be £1 each and it will be on a first come first served basis.
On
Saturday June 2, the first day of the country's official
celebrations, the council is staging an evening dance with music
from the tribute band Queen II. And to round off that evening there
will be a firework display in the grounds of Grange Hall.
On Sunday
June 3 a "Picnic in the Park" event is being held in Grange Hall
grounds and further details on this will be available shortly but it
is intended it will be a free afternoon with entertainment.
Plans are
also progressing for an exhibition in The Grange where it is
proposed to establish a room with memorabilia etc dating back to the
1950s. It is hoped the exhibition concerned will be on show for at
least a week. The Women's Institute is playing the leading role in
organising this and anyone able to assist with the loan of
memorabilia can contact the group through the parish clerk. The
exhibition organisers are looking for any items which can help
portrait the 1950s period including furniture, clothes and any other
artefacts. The exhibition will be open at various times during the
seven days it is planned it will be operating and stewards will be
on duty throughout the period public will be invited to attend.
Already
some items have been offered and it is hoped that a short written
history will be possible to be produced on at least some of the
memorabilia in order to create additional interest.
Anyone in
the village interested in assisting at any of these events is asked
to contact the council office on 0115 933 5808.

A very successful Business Forum for village
traders was held by the parish council on Monday January 9 in Grange
Hall and around 40 people attended. A number of council members
supported the event.
The chairman, Coun. Mrs Georgia Moore, in a
presentation to the meeting, touched on subjects such as car parking
in the village, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the visit of the
Olympic torch in June, the possibility of the formation of a traders
group, and emphasised the council’s desire to work together with
traders.
A number of differing views were made by the
traders on the question of car parking, some suggesting there should
be no charging and others there should be a charge after the first
two hours. The decision on charging or not is of course one for the
Borough Council which owns two car parks in the village but the
parish council would be consulted if action was being proposed.
It is planned there will be at least one more
follow up meeting and the suggestion of a traders group being formed
will hopefully be looked at in the future.
OLYMPIC TORCH FOR RADCLIFFE
Thursday June 28, 2012, will be a red-letter day for Radcliffe.
It has been chosen as one of the two places in Rushcliffe Borough for
the Olympic Torch when it makes its way across the country prior
to the opening of the Olympic Games in London the following
month.
A spokesman for the Borough Council says they are delighted that
Radcliffe has been chosen as one of the areas through which the
Olympic flame will be carried by torchbearers during the Olympic
torch relay.
The announcement was made by Coun. Mrs Jean Smith, local
Radcliffe Borough Councillor and cabinet member. She said: “This
is fantastic news for Radcliffe, for Rushcliffe and for
Nottinghamshire. The flame and local torchbearers will shine a
bright light on the area bringing beams to many faces. On June
28, Radcliffe will be honoured to be one of only five places in
the county taking part in this historic ceremony.
“I want everyone young and old to spread the word, so we can
build up a momentum over the next few months ensuring Rushcliffe
is ready to come together to celebrate the games. We’ve got
plans to get everyone involved in
the excitement and will be using social media like Twitter and
Facebook, as well as other methods, to keep everyone informed.
We want the torch to ignite people’s flame and enthusiasm to get
more involved and active in sport, art and culture.”
Georgia Moore, chairman of Radcliffe Parish Council, says: “This
is wonderful and exciting news for Radcliffe and will provide us
with one of the most important days in our village for many
years. I hope the whole village will play a part in helping the
parish council celebrate in the way such an event as this
deserves. It will, I hope, bring all ages together and we will
see hundreds of people out on our streets to give the torch a
truly sincere Radcliffe welcome.”
Arrangements for June 28 are currently being looked at and we
will be involved with Rushcliffe in ensuring the village
celebrates in the most appropriate way.
It is not known what time of day the Torch will arrive in the
village but it is thought to be later in the day because after
here it goes on to its resting place for the night in
Nottingham, believed to be the Castle.
WASTE
LAND TO WELCOME LAND
Progress
is being made on a scheme by the parish council
to improve the appearance of the present waste land near the
junction of Bingham Road and the A52 traffic lights opposite
the sports ground.
Nottinghamshire County Council has made the land available
to the parish council for just the legal costs of transfer
of ownership of it and once that has been completed the
parish council will be looking to instigate a scheme to
improve the area concerned.
One suggestions that is being considered is the provision of
a 'Welcome to Radcliffe on Trent' sign to greet motorists
coming to the village from the direction of Bingham.

NO RADCLIFFE COUNCIL TAX INCREASE

has estimated expenditure in the coming 2012/2013 financial

in the current year.

council's Finance and General Purposes Committee chairman,
Councillor Gordon Moore, has told his committee that in the current
year it will be necessary to keep all expenditure within budget.
U3A BRANCH FOR RADCLIFFE?
Over
300 people attended the inaugural
meetingof the Radcliffe U3A branch held at Grange Hall, giving
the formation of the branch a wonderful send off.
A further meeting has been held since to form a steering group
and about 20 people have been appointed to that.
The next meeting of the branch is scheduled to take place on
March 1 at Grange Hall at 1.30pm.
IMPROVEMENT SCHEME FOR VICARAGE LANE
Nottinghamshire
County Council has approved a scheme to reduce dangers and
improve the condition of Vicarage Lane under its Local
Improvement Scheme programme.
The work is due to start shortly and will
involve the provision of a raised pavement and new drainage. When
the work is complete there will be no provision for parking on
Vicarage Lane.
A PARISH PLAN?
Local
residents turned out in large numbers for an open meeting
that was held at Grange Hall on the question of production
of a Parish Plan, an idea put across to residents by the
parish council.
The meeting helped obtain the feelings of residents with
more than 180 being present, many putting their names
forward to be involved in future discussions and the running
of a steering committee that will need to be established.
If the idea is to be progressed it would be hoped a
committee can be formed, comprising of residents and with
council input into it.
A copy of the minutes of the meeting can be downloaded by
clicking on the link below or by going to the Meetings
section of the website.
The first meeting of the Steering Group will be held on
Thursday February 2 at The Grange at 7pm.

TREES AND PRESERVATION ORDERS
Rushcliffe
Borough Council is undertaking a project to review existing Tree
Preservation Orders including one in Radcliffe on Trent.
It has advised the parish council that the
Radcliffe 1973 Tree Preservation Order which was to cover
unspecified trees in specific locations was never confirmed and the
protection it sought to offer has lapsed.
The Borough Council is now to replace that
Order with a new one for more specific locations.
The 1973 Order related to trees in the Wharf
Lane area, at the Royal British Legion, St Mary's Parish Church, the
village centre and The Black Lion public house.
